Claude Code in Terminal vs Desktop App: How to Choose
Compare Claude Code in the terminal (claude CLI) vs the Claude Desktop Code tab: workflows, OS support, SSH, API/gateway routing, and session handoff.
UniRoute ·
Choosing between Claude Code in the terminal vs the desktop app is a workflow and environment decision, not a choice between two separate coding models. In the Claude Desktop app, the Code tab runs the same underlying Claude Code engine as the standalone claude CLI—sharing your repository's CLAUDE.md instructions, hooks, skills, and local settings—while wrapping it in a visual multi-pane workspace.
Here is the fastest way to decide which interface fits your task:
- Choose the Claude Desktop app (
Codetab) when you want supervised, visual repository work: reviewing side-by-side diffs with inline comments, running multiple parallel sessions in a sidebar with isolated Git worktrees, previewing a running web app in the built-in browser pane, or monitoring pull requests withAuto-fixandMerge when ready. - Choose the Terminal CLI (
claude) when you need composable Unix automation and headless execution: piping logs or diffs intoclaude -p, emitting structured JSON (--output-format), running CI/CD scripts with explicit startup configuration (--bare), pre-approving selected tools (--allowedTools), or coordinating multi-session CLI agent teams. - Use both on the same project when you want composable shell commands for scripting or quick investigation and Desktop's graphical diff and preview panes for interactive feature work—handing sessions off cleanly with
/desktop,claude --desktop --resume <session-id>, or/resume. - Check your OS, credential, and gateway routing rules separately: Desktop now offers macOS, Windows, and a Debian/Ubuntu Linux beta, plus SSH sessions and Claude Desktop on 3P for organization-managed or single-machine evaluation routing—but local Desktop sessions set
ANTHROPIC_BASE_URLthemselves and ignore shell or~/.claude/settings.jsonbase URL overrides.
All product interfaces, platform requirements, authentication rules, and third-party inference capabilities in this guide were verified against Anthropic's official documentation on October 21, 2026 (see the Desktop Quickstart, Claude Code Desktop Guide, CLI Reference, Authentication, and Claude Desktop on 3P).
1. Quick Terminology: Claude vs Cowork vs Claude Code
Searches for claude vs claude code often mix up the underlying model family, the general chat interface, and the agentic coding interfaces inside the desktop app. When you open the Claude Desktop app, you see three distinct tabs at the top (Desktop Quickstart):
| Interface / Term | What It Actually Is | Repository & Command Access | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude (Model family) | Anthropic's foundation models (such as Claude Sonnet and Claude Opus) that power chat, APIs, and coding agents | Depends on the client interface | Understanding which model weights are reasoning over your prompt |
Chat (Desktop tab / claude.ai) | General-purpose conversational interface | Not a repository coding agent (no built-in repo file tree or diff workspace, though you can attach files or enable user-authorized connectors/MCP tools) | Brainstorming, writing, and general Q&A outside a local Git workflow |
| Cowork (Desktop tab) | Autonomous background agent for longer multi-step tasks and Dispatch workflows (runs inside a hardened VM on macOS/Windows or QEMU/KVM on Linux) | Sandboxed VM workspace | Hands-off background research, document workflows, and Dispatch tasks |
Claude Code — Desktop Code tab | Graphical coding agent with side-by-side diff view, integrated terminal, file tree, and live app preview | Direct access to your selected local folder (or SSH / Cloud environment) | Interactive feature building, visual diff review, parallel worktree sessions, and local GUI scheduled tasks |
Claude Code — Terminal CLI (claude) | Standalone command-line coding agent installed in your shell | Direct access to your current working directory, shell environment, and stdin/stdout pipes | Terminal-native coding, claude -p scripts, CI/CD pipelines, and non-Debian Linux distributions |
When developers compare Claude Code in terminal vs desktop app, they are comparing the last two rows: the standalone claude CLI and the Desktop Code tab. Neither interface provides keystroke-level Tab inline autocomplete as you type; if you are weighing an agentic workflow against an AI-native editor with Tab prediction, see our Claude Code vs Cursor comparison.
2. Terminal CLI vs Desktop Code Tab: Side-by-Side Comparison
Although both clients run the same Claude Code engine, Desktop bundles its own managed copy of the engine and exposes different session, automation, and routing controls (Coming from the CLI):
| Dimension | Terminal CLI (claude) | Desktop App (Code Tab) |
|---|---|---|
| Engine & binary management | Standalone CLI binary in your shell (claude --version); updated independently | Same Claude Code engine, but Desktop downloads and updates its own embedded copy for local sessions (check via /status in the Code tab) |
| Diff review & code inspection | Inline terminal diffs (or external IDE diff when paired with VS Code / JetBrains extensions) | Visual side-by-side or unified diff pane, line-by-line review comments (Cmd/Ctrl+Enter), and /code-review cards with Walk through in diff and Apply fixes |
| Workspace & panes | Single terminal stream per process (commonly paired with tmux, split terminals, or an editor) | Rearrangeable & pop-out panes: chat, diff, file viewer/editor, integrated terminal, built-in browser preview, plan/tasks/subagent views, plus macOS iOS Simulator pane |
| Parallel sessions & Git worktrees | Multiple terminal tabs/windows (claude --worktree or manual branches); supports coordinated CLI agent teams | Persistent session sidebar across projects, one-click per-session isolated Git worktrees (configurable branch prefix), and side-by-side multi-session panes |
| Live app preview & PR monitoring | Run dev servers and gh commands in your shell | Built-in Browser pane wired to .claude/launch.json (auto-captures console/network errors) and PR status bar with Auto-fix and Merge when ready (requires gh CLI in local sessions) |
| Non-interactive & pipe automation | Full support: claude -p (--print), stdin pipes, --output-format (text/json/stream-json), --bare (minimal startup discovery), --tools / --allowedTools / --disallowedTools, dontAsk, claude daemon | Not designed for shell pipes or headless CI flags; offers GUI scheduled tasks (Desktop Scheduled Tasks) and cloud routines instead |
| SSH & remote execution | Run claude inside any SSH terminal session on any supported remote OS | Built-in SSH sessions in the environment selector (connects via SSH/SFTP, installs ~/.claude/remote/ on host, renders GUI locally; file pane is view-only and PR Merge when ready is disabled in SSH/WSL) |
| OS & architecture support | macOS 13.0+, Windows 10 1809+ / Server 2019+, Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 10+, Alpine Linux 3.19+ (x64 / arm64) | macOS universal (.dmg), Windows x64 & ARM64, and Linux (beta) via apt/.deb for Ubuntu 22.04+ and Debian 12+ (amd64 / arm64, libc6 >= 2.34) |
| Accounts, API keys & gateways | Claude subscription (claude.ai), Console OAuth/API key, Bedrock, Vertex/Agent Platform, Foundry, or ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL + ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN / ANTHROPIC_API_KEY | Standard sign-in uses a paid Claude subscription (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise); direct API, cloud providers, and gateways require Claude Desktop on 3P config (Developer → Configure Third-Party Inference or MDM/admin policies) |
| Session handoff | /desktop or claude --desktop [--continue | --resume <id>] (macOS & Windows x64 with Claude subscription only; CLI v2.1.285+) | Local /resume lists closed CLI sessions from the same machine and continues the same session (not a copy) |
3. Four Illustrative Workflow Scenarios: Which Interface Should You Pick?
The four scenarios below are illustrative workflow examples based on official feature boundaries, not live performance benchmarks.
Scenario A: Full-Stack Web Feature with Visual Diffs and Live Preview
Best fit: Desktop Code tab
When you are building or refactoring a frontend or full-stack feature, Desktop lets you attach design screenshots or PDFs directly to the prompt, @mention files with autocomplete, and watch Claude start your dev server via .claude/launch.json. You can inspect the live app in the built-in Browser pane, click specific lines in the diff viewer to leave batched revision comments (Cmd+Enter on macOS or Ctrl+Enter on Windows/Linux), and let Desktop monitor your GitHub PR checks once pushed.
Scenario B: Log Triage, Pre-Commit Checks, and CI/CD Automation
Best fit: Terminal CLI (claude -p)
Desktop cannot replace non-interactive shell pipelines. Whenever a workflow starts from standard input, a cron job, or a GitHub Actions runner, the CLI is the right tool:
# Pipe failing test output into non-interactive Claude Code CLI and emit JSON
pnpm test 2>&1 | claude -p "Identify the likely root cause of any failing assertion and output a minimal patch summary." \
--output-format json
For CI and automated scripts, the CLI also offers flags that Desktop does not expose (CLI Reference):
--bareskips auto-discovery of hooks, skills, plugins, MCP servers, andCLAUDE.mdfiles, and ignores saved OAuth/keychain logins so scripts initialize with only the credentials and flags you explicitly pass (such asANTHROPIC_API_KEYorapiKeyHelper).--toolsrestricts which built-in tools Claude can use, whereas--allowedToolsonly pre-approves selected tools to run without interactive permission prompts (it does not restrict the available toolset; use--disallowedToolsif you need to block specific tools or MCP servers).
Scenario C: Working Against a Remote Linux Server or Non-Debian Workstation
Best fit: Depends on whether you want a local GUI or a pure remote shell
- If your workstation is Fedora, RHEL, Arch, or Alpine Linux: Use the Terminal CLI. The official Linux Desktop beta only supports Ubuntu 22.04+ and Debian 12+ (
amd64/arm64withlibc6 >= 2.34), and explicitly directs non-Debian distributions to the CLI. Even on Ubuntu/Debian, note that Linux Desktop beta does not include Computer Use or voice dictation (voice dictation is available in the CLI), and Cowork requires/dev/kvm, QEMU/UEFI packages, and/dev/vhost-vsock. - If you want a local macOS/Windows/Ubuntu GUI connected to a remote SSH dev box: You do not have to give up Desktop. Select Add SSH connection in Desktop's environment selector. Desktop connects over SSH/SFTP, installs the remote Claude Code engine under
~/.claude/remote/on the host, and executes commands and network requests on the remote server while giving you Desktop's diff and chat UI locally. (Caveat: in Desktop SSH sessions, the file pane is view-only—ask Claude to make edits—and remote Linux SSH sessions do not source proxy/CA variables from~/.bashrcor~/.zshrc; putHTTPS_PROXYandNODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTSin remote~/.claude/settings.json.)
Scenario D: Using an Organization's API Key, Cloud Provider, or LLM Gateway
Best fit: Terminal CLI for quick env-var setup; Desktop 3P mode for managed/GUI setups
If you authenticate via ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN in your shell profile, launching the Terminal CLI picks those variables up immediately. Launching a local Desktop session does not—because Desktop sets ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL itself for local sessions and ignores shell/settings base URL overrides unless you configure Third-Party Inference inside Desktop (covered in Section 4 below).
4. Accounts, Billing, and Gateway Routing: What Actually Changes?
Do Terminal and Desktop Share Subscription Limits?
Yes. When you sign in to both clients with the same claude.ai subscription account (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise), both draw from the same subscription usage allowance. Switching from Terminal to Desktop (or vice versa) does not grant a separate quota or change underlying model token rates, and running the same engine does not guarantee identical token consumption per task because workspace context (such as open previews, attachments, or subagents) varies by workflow.
On Claude Team plans, Claude Code access is included with every Team seat (standard and premium seats differ in usage allowance, and new/self-serve Enterprise plans include Claude Code in their single seat type; older Enterprise contracts may vary—see the Team & Enterprise Plan Guide).
How CLI Authentication Precedence Works (ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL Alone Does Not Switch Billing)
In the standalone claude CLI, when multiple credentials exist on the same machine, Claude Code resolves the active credential according to its official authentication precedence rules:
- Active API, gateway, or cloud credentials override a saved
claude.aisubscription login: Cloud provider flags (CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK,CLAUDE_CODE_USE_VERTEX,CLAUDE_CODE_USE_FOUNDRY),ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN(takes effect immediately),ANTHROPIC_API_KEY(takes effect after one-time interactive approval, or automatically in-pnon-interactive mode), andapiKeyHelpertake precedence overCLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN(claude setup-token) and saved/loginsessions. (Note: enterprise managed policies or signed-in app gateway configurations can also govern routing; see the official precedence doc for full profile and federation rules.) - Setting
ANTHROPIC_BASE_URLalone does not switch billing (LLM Gateway Docs): If you setANTHROPIC_BASE_URLwithout an active gateway/API credential (ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN,ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, orapiKeyHelper), Claude Code continues using your savedclaude.ailogin and subscription limits. Only when a gateway or API credential is active does billing switch to per-token API/gateway billing. For a breakdown of input, output, and 5m/1h prompt cache token math, see our Claude Code API pricing guide.
Is Claude Desktop Subscription-Only? (Understanding Claude Desktop on 3P)
Standard consumer Desktop onboarding prompts you to sign in with a paid Claude subscription. However, Claude Desktop is not limited to claude.ai subscriptions in every deployment mode.
Anthropic provides Claude Desktop on 3P (Desktop 3P Overview), which supports routing Desktop's Chat, Cowork, and Code tabs through:
- Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform (Vertex), or Microsoft Foundry
- Anthropic's Claude API directly (
inferenceProvider=anthropic, using Console browser sign-in,inferenceAnthropicApiKey, orinferenceCredentialHelper—see Claude API on Desktop) - An Anthropic-compatible LLM gateway (
inferenceProvider=gateway—see LLM Gateway on Desktop)
While organizations typically deploy 3P settings via MDM (macOS .mobileconfig / Windows Group Policy), the Enterprise Admin Console, or a bootstrap server, individual developers can also configure single-machine evaluation directly inside the Desktop app:
- Open Help → Troubleshooting → Enable Developer Mode.
- Open Developer → Configure Third-Party Inference…, select your provider (
Anthropic Direct,LLM Gateway, or a cloud provider), and enter your base URL/credential helper or API key. - Click Apply & Restart, and skip the standard Anthropic sign-in screen when the app relaunches (admin-delivered policies always take precedence and make the developer form read-only).
Why Your CLI Gateway Variables Don't Automatically Route Local Desktop Sessions
This is the single most common configuration trap when moving between Terminal and Desktop:
- Local Desktop sessions set
ANTHROPIC_BASE_URLthemselves and ignoreANTHROPIC_BASE_URLin your shell profile or~/.claude/settings.json(Environment variables set by Desktop). Desktop only routes local sessions to a gateway when configured via Third-Party Inference (inferenceProvider=gateway). - Desktop 3P gateway protocol & prompt caching: A compatible Desktop gateway must expose the Anthropic Messages API (
POST /v1/messageswith streaming and tool use;GET /v1/modelsis optional ifinferenceModelsis configured) and should preserve or properly translatecache_controlprompt-caching semantics (cache_read_input_tokens) so multi-turn sessions can reuse context. Actual cache hits and cost still depend on upstream provider rules, prompt prefix stability, and TTL—always verify cache read tokens in the responseusagepayload rather than assuming every turn will hit cache. Generic "OpenAI-compatible"/v1/chat/completionsendpoints are not enough, and Anthropic officially does not support routing Claude Code to non-Claude models through any gateway. - Feature restrictions when Desktop gateway routing is active: When a Desktop 3P gateway configuration is active (Connect via an LLM gateway), Anthropic-hosted cloud sessions and Remote Control are unavailable, and Desktop SSH sessions are in beta (requiring an explicit
sshHostAllowlistand a gateway URL reachable from the remote SSH host—notlocalhoston your laptop).
5. Switching or Using Both: Migration & Session Continuation Checklist
Because both interfaces share local project configuration, you can adopt Desktop without rebuilding your setup—provided you account for a few key precedence differences (Shared configuration).
Step 1: Verify Engine Versions and Git State
- In the Terminal CLI, run
claude --versionandclaude auth status --text. - In the Desktop
Codetab, type/statusto see the embedded Claude Code version and active credential. Because Desktop manages its own embedded binary, its version can temporarily differ from your global shellclaude. - Ensure
git statusis clean (or enable Desktop's per-session Git worktree option) before running both interfaces on the same repository.
Step 2: Check What Is Shared vs What Differs
- Automatically shared on the same local machine:
- Project and user memory files (
CLAUDE.md,CLAUDE.local.md,~/.claude/CLAUDE.md) - Custom skills, slash commands, subagents, and lifecycle hooks
- Permission rules and settings in
~/.claude/settings.json,.claude/settings.json, and.claude/settings.local.json - MCP servers configured in
~/.claude.jsonand.mcp.json
- Project and user memory files (
- Important differences to watch:
claude_desktop_config.json& MCP precedence: Local DesktopCodesessions also load MCP servers from the Claude Desktop app'sclaude_desktop_config.json, which the standalone CLI does not read automatically (on macOS and WSL, you can import them into CLI viaclaude mcp add-from-claude-desktop). If a server name exists in bothclaude_desktop_config.jsonand~/.claude.json/.mcp.json, local DesktopCodeusesclaude_desktop_config.json. Furthermore, forstdioMCP servers defined in both top-level~/.claude.jsonand.mcp.json, local DesktopCodeprioritizes~/.claude.json(reversing the CLI's project-first precedence).- Shell environment variables: When launched from the macOS Dock/Finder, Desktop reads
~/.zshrc/~/.bashrconly to extractPATHand a fixed list of Claude Code variables—not arbitrary custom exports. On Windows, Desktop inherits user/system environment variables but does not evaluate PowerShell$PROFILE. Dev servers launched via.claude/launch.jsonalso do not inherit variables from~/.claude/settings.json.
Step 3: Hand Off Sessions Cleanly (Close Before Resuming)
There is no real-time two-way sync while the exact same session is open in both windows simultaneously. Always close or exit the active session in one interface before continuing it in the other:
- Terminal → Desktop (
/desktoporclaude --desktop):- Inside an interactive CLI session, run
/desktopto save the conversation, launch it in the Desktop app, and exit the terminal. - From your shell (requires CLI v2.1.285+), run
claude --desktopto start a new Desktop session in the current folder, claude --desktop --continuefor the most recent session, orclaude --desktop --resume <session-id>(must be a session ID, not a display name, and the session cannot still be running in another terminal). - Availability limit:
/desktopandclaude --desktopare only supported on macOS and Windowsx64when signed in with a Claude subscription—they are not available on Linux, Windows ARM64, or when authenticated via API keys, Bedrock, Agent Platform, or Foundry.
- Inside an interactive CLI session, run
- Desktop → Terminal (and Local
/resumeon any OS):- Inside a local Desktop
Codesession (not SSH, WSL, or cloud), type/resumeto list closed CLI sessions from the same machine and continue the exact same session (not a duplicate) with full conversation history. - Conversely, once you close a local session in Desktop, running
claude --resumein your terminal in that repository can find and continue that same session.
- Inside a local Desktop
6. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is Claude Desktop the same as Claude Code in the terminal?
The Claude Desktop app contains three tabs: Chat, Cowork, and Code. The Code tab runs the same underlying Claude Code engine as the terminal claude CLI, whereas the Chat tab is a general conversation interface (it is not a repository coding agent with a built-in project workspace or diff viewer, though users can attach files or enable user-authorized connectors/MCP tools). Note that Desktop manages its own embedded copy of the Claude Code binary and does not install the claude command into your system shell.
Can I use both the terminal CLI and Desktop app on the same project?
Yes. Both clients read the same CLAUDE.md, .claude/settings.json, hooks, skills, and .mcp.json files. If you want to run concurrent tasks without file conflicts, enable isolated Git worktrees in Desktop (or pass --worktree in the CLI), and always close a session in one interface before resuming it in the other.
Does the Claude Desktop app work on Linux?
Yes, in beta for Ubuntu 22.04+ and Debian 12+ on x86_64 (amd64) and arm64 (libc6 >= 2.34) via Anthropic's official apt repository (claude-desktop). Computer Use and voice dictation are not available in the Linux Desktop beta, Cowork requires KVM/QEMU virtualization and vhost_vsock, and /desktop CLI handoff is macOS/Windows x64-only. Users on Fedora, RHEL, Arch, or Alpine should use the standalone claude CLI.
Can Claude Desktop use an API key or LLM gateway instead of a subscription?
Yes, via Claude Desktop on 3P (Developer → Configure Third-Party Inference… for single-machine evaluation, or MDM/Admin Console policies for teams). However, local Desktop sessions set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL themselves and ignore ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL in your shell or ~/.claude/settings.json—you must configure the gateway or direct Claude API credentials inside Desktop's Third-Party Inference configuration.
Will switching between Terminal and Desktop save money?
No. If you sign in with a Claude subscription, both clients share the same account usage allowance. If you route through an API key or LLM gateway, both bill per token according to the prompts, tool outputs, and any prompt cache reuse (cache_control) during your session.
7. Next Steps & Related Guides
- Already using a Claude Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise subscription? You do not need an external API key or gateway credit just to switch between the Terminal CLI and the Desktop
Codetab—both work with your existing subscription login. - Want to route the Terminal CLI (
claude) through UniRoute with per-request token logs? Follow our Claude Code CLI setup guide, create a UniRoute API key, or review UniRoute pricing and Claude Code with OpenRouter vs UniRoute. - Evaluating Desktop Third-Party Inference (
